Diabetes mellitus is characterised by high and steadily increasing prevalence, chronic manifestation, and serious long-term consequences. According to current estimates, 8 million people in Germany suffer from diabetes mellitus, of which approximately 95pc are patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.1
