This article provides an overview of the different types of cough medicine. There is a consideration of the mechanism of action of each group and the evidence base for the use of cough medicines. The use of cough medicines in children is highlighted as guidelines in this area have recently changed. The prescriber is reminded of some common prescribing issues relating to this group of medicines.
